Gameplay
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, like all the previous releases in the Super Mario Bros. franchise is a side-scrolling platforming game where players collect coins as they attempt to make their way through progressively more difficult game levels using their ability to time jumps over obstacles and avoid a slew of enemies. But although the game contain several well-deserved nods to previous games in the series in the form of iconic characters like Mario, Luigi and two Toads, as well as familiar enemies, sound effects and levels, it is not simply another trip down Mario Bros. memory lane. Taking advantage of the flexibility and power of the Wii and Wii Remote, New Super Mario Bros. Wii manages to preserve the retro experience that fans love about the series, while adding new game features. Notable additions among these include, expansive play levels and new powerups and characters, but by far the most important, and in fact game-defining new feature is simultaneous multiplayer.

A Franchise First: Simultaneous Multiplayer
Since the very first Super Mario Bros. game took the world by storm in the late 1980s gamers anxious to get into the action have patiently and impatiently waited their turn as the infamous 'player 2.' Those days are no more. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii players can now navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time, on the same level, at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun.

Controller Choices Via the Wii Remote
In another nod to the series' Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) roots, the Wii Remote controller used with New Super Mario Bros. Wii is held sideways, allowing for easy, classic inputs using the D-pad to direct playable characters, the 1 button to jump and 2 button to spit out projectiles like snowballs and fireballs. In addition, players can access powerups with their choice of either the push of a button, or by shaking the Wii remote, again demonstrating the perfect merging of classic gameplay and modern game design which is New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Key Game Features

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii offers a combination of cooperation and competition. Players can pick each other up to save them from danger or toss them into it.
  • Supports 2-4 players in multiplayer mode.
  • Mario, Luigi and two Toads are all playable characters, while many others from the Mushroom Kingdom make appearances throughout the game. Players can even ride different Yoshi characters and use their tongues to swallow enemies – or their fellow players.
  • In some areas, players use the motion abilities of the Wii Remote controller. The first player to reach a seesaw might make it tilt to help his or her character reach a higher platform – and then tilt it incorrectly just to mess with other players.
  • New items include the propeller suit, which will shoot players high into the sky with just a shake of the Wii Remote and Mario’s new ability to transform into Penguin Mario.
  • At the end of each stage during the simultaneous multiplayer mode, players are ranked based on their score, the coins collected and the number of enemies defeated.

Best Mario Title Ever!

One of the reasons I waited so long on getting this game was because I was afraid that fifty dollars was simply too much money for a 2D platformer, especially when Nintendo is selling other Mario games for five to eight bucks a piece. I've always liked Mario and figured I'd enjoy the game, but I kept asking myself, "Is this game really worth what Nintendo wants for it?" So, I waited a year or two before picking it up used for what seemed like a less wasteful thirty bucks. Friends, let me be clear: This game is well worth the fifty dollars you'd pay for it new. This game is the best Mario game yet. Here's why:

Difficulty: This game could have been titled, "Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels 2" if Nintendo had been so inclined. As most Mario players know, The Lost Levels is the most difficult game in the Mario canon. If New Super Mario Bros. Wii wasn't so forgiving in terms of the amount of readily available lives, it would be harder than The Lost Levels. I beat the game in two days without a single game over, but I what must have been at least one hundred times. You will be challenged, and you will be insulted when Nintendo's "Super Guide" feature offers to play the level for you! (although, this is a nice option since the game is really hard and probably even harder for someone who hasn't played that much Mario).

Graphics: I like the style they employed here. It didn't try too hard. You don't want your Mario to look too realistic. Although, I think that HD capabilities might have made a few spots look a little better.

Overall Gameplay: It's Mario my friends. It most closely resembles the style of gameplay presented in Mario 3, but some elements of Super Mario World and other titles come to mind at points.

Controls: For the most part, it's NES-style gameplay with the Wii Remote held sideways. You can basically play the entire game just running with B and jumping with A, but you have a spin jump that can be employed by shaking the Remote. There are also some platforms that are moved by tilting the Remote. The only time I was really annoyed by the motion controls was on 7-4 where I kept spin jumping when I wanted to move the platforms. It actually made rather mad that the controls got me killed so many times, but it's just one level and not a big deal.

Music: Most of your favorite themes from Mario games long past make a return here with new versions. I was particularly happy to see the Hammer Brothers battle theme return from Mario 3. The Castle levels seem to have a more "epicy" soundtrack that makes you think, "Hmm, I didn't realize Mario's quest was so important!" It's kind of weird, but also kind of awesome. If I have one complaint, it's that the main level theme is a little overused. It would have been better if they'd used different melodies on the different worlds.

Multiplayer: I've only played it for an eve with a single friend, but I wasn't too too impressed by it. You and your friends always seem to want to jump to the same places, and the camera zooms out to cover everything when you're spread out. Also, I'm lamenting the lack of a traditional alternating Mario multiplayer.

Lasting Appeal: I've only had it for a week, but this game is one that I'll play until I've completely conquered in ever way imaginable. And then, I might even play it again. It's that good.

Classic Mario returns

This game is highly addictive and every bit as fun as the "old school" Mario games from years past. New thesme and new levels and fun for the whole family.

Family pleaser

We have had this game for a while and the kids and my Husband still play it alot. I like it too. You can't go wrong with this game.

Great game, too easy, but I still love it.

This game is more forgiving than the previous Mario Bros games. but just like all other Mario games, it's innovative, and loads of fun. And the four player mode at one time is so much fun, and difficult! 5 stars for sure!
