Story
In the near future, governments are supposedly at peace, but a shadow war, fought by private military corporations, is raging. You, along with a myriad of comrades and enemies alike — up to 256 in all — are dropped into this unprecedented war. To start off you must prove yourself as a member of your 8-man squad, fighting for one of the PMCs. With enough experience you may even become an elite fighter or earn the right to lead a squad, platoon or ultimately an entire army of players. Can you, will you follow orders? Either way your destiny and those of 255 other fighters awaits on the battlefield of MAG.

Gameplay
In MAG players take on the role of a member of a private military corporation (PMC), in a fictional Earth future. Like most MMO games, as well as some modern shooters, the ultimate goal of action is the leveling up of your character, in this case through success in combat against other factions made up of individual online players. At the initial level players choose the PMC they will be aligned with, the physical characteristics of their character, initial available weaponry, etc. and hit the battlefield with other squad members within a persistent online environment. Along the way you will utilize a diverse skill tree to develop your character's abilities and skills at tactics and weapons using experience points that are accumulated in campaign and mission play in the name of your faction. These points are given out in various increments for all manner of action, whether that be objective completion, or individual actions in combat. Once characters reach a certain level they are eligible to take on command duties. These duties range from leading an eight-man squad, all the way to overall command of more than 100 online players. Orders are communicated and strategy developed via voice chat and other functionality. Success in command positions allows for access to special "leadership bonuses" that not only can improve your abilities, but also in many cases, that of the individuals and units under your command.

So, how does one give orders to human individuals online? Just as you would to AI (artificial intelligence) characters. The beauty of MAG is that players are free to ignore orders issued by superiors at any time. Experience point totals, the nuts and bolts of character leveling, are higher for successes achieved through orders that follow the chain of command though. War, especially that featuring multiple factions, can be fought in many ways, and in MMO gameplay world of MAG it's up to you to decided the path you'll follow.

Private Military Corporations (PMCs)
Bound by the terms of the terms of the Millennium Accord, which prevents defense forces from crossing borders, nations with the MAG game world turn to the services of Private Military Corporations (PMCs) to secure interests abroad. The leading PMCs compete for contracts across the globe. Each of these maintains its own battlefield philosophy and approach to military operations. It's up to each player to choose his/her loyalty. Some of the factions players can expect to see include:

The Raven insignia from MAG Raven
Based in Vienna, Austria, Raven Industries, GmbH provides specialized military services using precise, cutting-edge equipment and advanced tactical coordination.
The S.V.E.R. insignia for MAG S.V.E.R. (Seryi Volk Executive Response)
S.V.E.R is based in Grozny, in the Chechen Republic. Unconventional in their look and a fierce fighting style, S.V.E.R operative consist of former soldiers and private citizen, some with rumored criminal backgrounds.
The Valor faction insignia from MAG Valor
Founded by former US Army officers, Valor Company, Inc. offers an experienced team of veterans drawn from US, British and Mexican forces. The company is headquartered in the Alaskan wilderness.

Massive Fun Game

The MAG experience is like nothing else out there on consoles. The visuals are ok, but the THX certified sound is amazing in a surround sound setting. The huge maps, non-stop action mix with tactical squad communication makes MAG a one in its class console game. This is not Call of Duty in a bigger scale, this is something entirely different, where coordination is more important than individual skill.
I highly recommend getting into a clan, because otherwise it can get frustrating, and join VALOR lol.
Have fun!

MAG is a great game

Great game, the overall fun factor is 5 stars for sure. Game play is a lot like SOCOM not surprising since its made by the same company (Zipper). There is a training mode to get you accustomed to game play then you can go to suppression mode which is basically a team death match, good way to rank up a few levels and test out your equipment. as you rank up you open other levels of game play like Sabotage, ( 64 player capture 2 objectives then get the third for the win), Acquisition (128 player) and then domination (full 256). The game play gets a little hairy the further you go up in game modes i.e. its easier to follow what is going on in the lower levels and the bigger games can sometimes be overwhelming until you figure out what needs to be done for the win. There are leadership levels where you can do things like call in airstrikes which add a nice touch to the game. Basically you are always in an 8 man squad no matter how many players in the game and you are assigned to some objective by the squad leader, you get bonus points for killing enemies or capturing objectives near your assigned task. The weapons are descent, i think the vehicles could be more useful ( or more diverse). You really need a mic to talk to your squad it makes the game play much better and helpful to your stats too. now for the negatives... you can only rank up to level 60 in the game but so the skill points needed to unlock weapons is basically capped at 60 so you have to use them wisely. (you cant unlock every upgrade) they have respec points which lets you re-allocate all your skill points but the number of respec it takes is too high so sometimes you get stuck with a set up that you dont like much and have to play it out until you can respec again. The knife swipe is not very good, you practically have to be on top of someone for it to work but there are upgrades for it. you have to choose a faction to fight with (one of 3) at the beginning of the game and if you want to switch you have to either delete your character and start over or get up to level 60 and go to veteran mode (10% xp bonus and you can switch factions or stay with the one you are with). So there are a few things that could be better but it is a really good game and i would recommend it.

Are you a natural-born leader? Show us what you've got on MAG.

First of all, I'd like to point out that I have no experience playing the game Modern Warfare 2, a contemporary that MAG is frequently compared to. I'll also cut to the chase and not summarize what MAG is like since that can be found in almost every other review.
I'll start by saying that MAG is a different game for different people. MAG is a tactical game disguised as a first-person shooter (FPS). As an FPS, MAG will fall short with many FPS fans because it's is not the prettiest looking game, and will feel sluggish compared to games like Modern Warfare 2 and Unreal Tournament (which I've only seen played). In the world of FPS games only 2 things primarily matter: looking good and achieving maximum responsiveness. MAG's responsiveness mimics real-life human limitations and is thereby slower. Another thing that will disappoint FPS fans is the lack of variety in guns. There aren't really many kinds of guns, but different types of guns. Each faction has a few assault rifles, SMGs, machine guns, sniper rifles, and one shotgun. By now you're probably thinking: So the graphics are sub-par, the controls are sluggish compared to contemporary FPS games, and there are hardly any gun choices. Who would want this game?
The gamer who likes tactical, object-based, team-oriented game play would want this game. If none of these things appeal to you, MAG is probably not the game for you. However, if any of this does sound interesting to you then you're in for an experience like nothing before. There are 3 objective based game types with 3 maps each (one for each faction) and while this may seem like not very many maps, I assure you that these maps are very large, very detailed, and scattered with objectives. Playing in the positions of command like squad leader, platoon leader, and company leader offer a vastly different gaming experience than that of the typical grunt following orders. Your duties include setting objectives (highlighting objectives on the map which yield double-points to those in proximity) and performing tactical actions like mortars, air-strikes, and UAV to track enemies on the map. While in a commanding position, you may in fact spend most of the 15-30 minute game in the map screen itself, setting objectives and performing tactical actions. This may seem boring to some, but for me this experience is amazing. Commanding human players on the battlefield, yelling instructions and warnings at them, spotting enemies with UAV, and backing them up with airstrikes/mortars and ultimately leading them to victory is an experience unlike any other game I've played. And frankly, there isn't another game that will give you this experience. Even if you're only of average skill at FPS games but are interested in devising, executing, and refining strategies in an objective based game you might just have a blast with this game. Then again, if you're excellent at FPS games you'll probably enjoy single-handedly taking an enemy's bunker and pushing them back further into their territory. (When you successfully destroy an enemy's first line of defense they're forced to spawn further back.) Again, it's not the prettiest, it isn't about having the biggest variety of guns, and while the controls are slower than other FPS games, they still solid and responsive. For any PS3 owner this game is definitely worth a try, especially if want to experience a unique and rewarding tactical experience.

Fun Online Massive Shooter Game that needs a few tweaks to make it great!

Purchased this game as a pre-order, and have been playing it sense. Gameplay is fun, and the ability to try and do different things, making the game more tactical than running around shooting and being shot, make the game great. However, the level-up system is good, and definitely makes for continued play to be better equipped! Some simply tweaks in the game that explain better the point system (how you score xp) and the control of your character's career would make it better. But all in all, it is very good online multiplayer game, requiring communication and cooperation with teammates in order to be successful.

Online only

I'm not going to detract from it's rating for not having a single player mode. It was advertised as online only and I was fully aware of this when I bought it. Playing the same maps over and over does get tedious.

I like the customization options and the leadership idea. There's little to be done to convince people that the game isn't to be played like MW2 (in this, everyone needs to work together to complete objectives versus running around doing his own thing.)

At first it seemed like SVER would just dominate everyone with their high damage weapons (Raven has high accuracy weapons and Valor has balanced weapons), but once people learned how to use tactics, things began to even out.

Overall, great game. Would like to see more maps and battle options. Make sure it's not your only game with a new PS3.
