Description

Each installment of the Final Fantasy series has featured strong storytelling, characterization, and strategic combat, fun minigames, and hours upon hours of captivating gameplay. The 10th title in the series is no exception. This is the first time a Final Fantasy game has appeared on the PlayStation2, and it takes full advantage of the increased technical capabilities.

The story this time concerns Tidus, a blond-haired star of a sport called Blitzball. While he is playing in a match, Tidus's city is attacked by an evil force called Sin, and everything is destroyed save Tidus and his guardian Auran. The adventure begins as the pair are somehow transported to another world. From here on, it's standard Final Fantasy gameplay: fight battles, manage experience points, learn new powers, and recruit a motley crew of nonplayer characters to join your quest.

The graphics, however, take things to a new level. They are amazing not only for their realism, but also for their imaginative art design. The world these heroes inhabit is breathtakingly beautiful, flowing, and full of inventive surprises. You haven't lived until you've surfed cables high in the air, or ridden a graceful airship through the clouds. The stunning effects are on display when you use magic in combat, summon gigantic monsters, and use fire columns to devastate your foes.

One new element is voice acting. The innovation yields predictably mixed results: it's wonderful to hear spoken dialogue rather than read subtitles, but as with most games translated from Japanese, the acting is mediocre and sometimes unintentionally hilarious.

Still, the game's new graphics engine and solid gameplay are sure to please fans of the series waiting to see what Square has in store for them. While Final Fantasy X doesn't offer much innovation, it also doesn't disappoint. And fortunately, with Final Fantasy XI already in development, the title is still a misnomer. --Andrew S. Bub

Pros:

  • Gorgeous graphics
  • Epic story line
  • Voice acting
Cons:
  • Little innovation
  • The voice acting is sometimes laughable

The Greatest of all Final Fantasy's

I have to say, I may be in the minority here, but I've been playing Final Fantasy games from the beginning (having finished the first FF time and time again) and I have to say X is my favorite. The story is wonderfully memorable, the characters are delightful and you come to love them... the fighting system rocks, everything about the game is top-notch with the possible exception of the lack of a true overworld and the stupid underwater football bits in the beginning. Beyond that though, the story shines and I was sad, oh so sad when it was over. Must by.

One of the most famous additions to the Square Enix family.

The first Final Fantasy game to hit the PS2, and one of the best to be sure. A deep and fantastic story, 30 plus hours of gameplay, with gorgeous graphics even by todays standards. There is a reason this game made it to greatest hits status.

wonderful storyline

this was the first final fantasy that i have played since i had my ps2 back then, it has great storyline in it and you really get into the characters, nice graphics for ps2 lots of things to keep you interested for a long time!

Beautifully rendered with an engaging story

The Final Fantasy series completely reinvented the RPG genre, turning it into something that can cause the player to gain an emotional attachment to the characters. With Final Fantasy X, the first game in the series with voice acting, that familiar sense of attachment has been wholly translated to a simple yet beautiful and emotional story.

The CGI scenes are beautifully rendered, the backgrounds - especially those of Besaid Island and Macalania - lush and colorful, the story simple, yet at the same time, wonderfully complex. One of the biggest complaints about the game is the voice acting. Personally, I believed that the voice actors worked with what they were given, and that dubs are notorious for being very bad. James Arnold Taylor gives an effective, if occasionally obnoxious (but I don't believe it's his fault: he voiced Ratchet perfectly), reading for the main protagonist Tidus, and at times it feels as though you're right there with him. Every voice actor chosen for the English dub was, I believe, very well chosen.

The storyline begins very simply: Tidus lives in a machina (machine) city known as Zanarkand and is the local star of the Zanarkand Abes Blitzball team (a form of underwater soccer). An attack by an entity known as Sin, however, launches him into another world, 1000 years into the future, known as Spira. He begins a quest with a young summoner, Yuna, and a cast of colorful characters to vanguish Sin and find a way to return home.

The depth of the story as it goes on, however, can be amazing. Subplots are uncovered; new, vast areas for exploration (a temple off the Calm Lands, accessable only by chocobo, and especially the Omega Ruins) are discovered via the airship, unlocked later in the game. Fiends can be captured to create awesome new creatures that give worthwhile prizes once defeated. Character depth and development, while not particularly noteworthy, is still enough to be engaging. The most painful thing will be early in the game, when random battles pop up while going from place to place, and of course the frequency of cutscenes and the inability to skip them. Still, it isn't enough to take away from the story and the journey, and can have you playing (if you go for every hidden area and secret) for well over seventy hours.

All in all, the game is an excellent buy and still looks beautiful, even alongside newer games for the powerhouse PlayStation 3 and its Blu-ray-based games. No matter what price you pay for it, it will be worth your time and money.

The Best Game Ever

This game isn't like others. I Have enjoyed most of the time playing this game. It has a great story and music that will make love it even more!. I think that this game is the best game I have ever played.
